Is Tantra Witnessing or Letting Go?
A few days ago, a student at our school asked me a stimulating question. She had read somewhere that “Tantra is witnessing.” This definition, however, clashed with her practical experience of abandonment, totality, and expansion.
She asked me what I thought. I’m happy to take this opportunity to clarify and share my vision of Tantra.
Shiva and Shakti: The Two Faces of Reality
To understand Tantra, we must look to its classical roots. This tradition explains existence through two fundamental principles:
- Shakti (The Feminine Principle): Is the living, dynamic, and creative energy. It represents movement, manifestation, and the ability to flow and let go.
- Shiva (The Masculine Principle): Is the still consciousness. It is the pure presence, the empty and welcoming space that observes without judgment. The witness, indeed.
Misunderstanding arises when we consider these two aspects as opposites or separate.

The Risks of Fragmentation
What happens if we experience only one of these two sides?
If we choose only totality, we risk losing ourselves. Without a center, the intensity of experience turns into chaos. We become leaves in the wind, overwhelmed by emotions and sensations, unable to integrate them.
If we choose only witnessing, the experience becomes arid. The essence, warmth, and flavor of life are missing. We become detached and cold observers, unable to truly participate in the miracle of existence.
The True Essence: Totality + Witness
For me, Tantra is not a choice between one or the other. Tantra is the perfect integration of both principles.
It means being totally immersed in the experience, keeping awareness intact.
You can expand, enjoy, dance, and let go (Shakti) precisely because within you there is a still space that observes and sustains everything (Shiva). The presence of the witness does not block intensity; on the contrary, it makes it secure and immense.
Tantra is this sacred union: the fire of energy burning brightly in the space of consciousness.

A small practical exercise: Grounding yourself in the Witness during movement
You can begin to experience this union in your daily life with a very simple exercise:
1 – Put on a dynamic music track you like and begin to move your body freely.
2 – Activate Shakti: Let yourself go completely to the rhythm. Dance, breathe deeply, and expand your sensations without placing physical limits on yourself. It is the totality of energy.
3 – Activate Shiva: While your body dances and is in full movement, bring your attention to a still point within you, such as a center behind the heart or the center of the head.
4 – Observe your own body moving from that calm space. You are the energy that dances, but you are also the still space that observes it flow.
